On Laughter:

"I tell you about something I read right at the start of my comedy career, thirty years ago. It was a book called Laughter by Henri Bergson, the French philosopher. I came across it in a second-hand bookshop and practically devoured it in a single session. It contains the explanation I’ve found most useful in looking at comedy over the past twenty-five years. He said this: laughter is a social sanction against inflexible behaviour, which requires a momentary anaesthesia of the heart."
